*Black History Month is almost here, and instead of dwelling on the fact that our peeps get recognized only on the shortest month of the year (Yes, I just had to go there), let’s celebrate each of the days by showing up to some awesome events right here in Los Angeles. You’ll have to do a bit more research if you don’t reside in southern Cali. Sorry.
Thanks to the team at Black Cultural Events, we have quite a few exciting happenings to share. Continue reading →
*Hear ye! Hear ye! Calling all actors and actresses! Interested in working with actor Miguel Nunez, Jr? We just received an email from Financial Analyst and Your Black World publisher, Dr. Boyce Watkins. He is working on a new project with Mr. Nunez and they are seeking actors and actresses interested in potentially being involved.
Nunez is known for his work in a variety of film roles including leading roles in Juwanna Mann and Tour of Duty. He is set for at least four new film projects in 2018.
*(Updated) “Black women filmmakers are having a kind of moment now.” These oh-so-true words are from the mouth of one of them. Filmmaker, actress, producer and yes, celebrity wife — Angela Robinson Witherspoon has been married to comedian and actor John Witherspoon (‘Friday’)…”forever” she muses at one point.
She even appeared in film with Witherspoon prior to becoming his wife! Check out her IMBD, where she plays the fellow passenger to his blind character in a film called, ‘Kidnapped’. It looks hilarious.
We’ve seen her on the small screen (Criminal Minds, ‘Ugly Betty,’ and , feature films (Robert Townsend’s ‘Meteor Man,’ ‘Terminator III,’ ‘Sister Code’ and the upcoming film, ‘Hold On,’) and in theatre, too, in a diverse palette of roles. Her latest offering puts her in the director’s chair; where she works with her longtime friend, writer and producer, Ronnie Grant, in his self-penned autobiographical piece, ‘Curtsy Mister’: The Story of a Young Boy Trapped in a Pair of Slingbacks.’
Grant’s story looks like a fascinating one! Raised in the projects in New York City, he grew to work with the likes of Diana Ross, Cher and Miles Davis and became the very first male Fashion Editor of Essence Magazine.
I’ve only seen the movie trailer as of this writing, but from my research its clear audiences are reacting favorably during Q&A’s at screenings. The documentary also accepted the award for ‘Best Documentary’ at the Studio City Film Festival, and has since been invited to screen at Martha’s Vineyard.
With all of this going on, I saw no greater talent to introduce the new ‘SPOTLIGHT ON’ seriesto our readers, than with this versatile actor/director/producer: Angela Robinson Witherspoon.
*Hill Harper and fellow actor Nate Parker team up again to host their 10th Annual Toy Drive & Fundraiser — and this year the men are joined by a host committee of change makers that include political commentator Angela Rye, popular DJ B Hen, TV personality Vanessa Simmons and iHeart Media program director, Doc Wynter.
The charity event takes place in Hollywood on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 8pm-12am at the Avalon Hollywood – 1735 Vine St., Los Angeles, CA 90028 and boasts attendance by numerous leading actors, entertainers and philanthropists.
For the past nine years the dynamic duo has changed the lives of underprivileged youth across Los Angeles. Both men are respected for their activism; but in addition, Harper is a successful actor, author, television host and entrepreneur and Parker has gleaned success as an actor (You’ve seen ‘Birth of a Nation’ right?), director, producer, writer, and musical performer.
Together, these two powerhouse men create a joyful holiday season for hundreds as they collect toys for youth and raise funds for the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation?s Summer Empowerment Academy and the Nate Parker Foundation?s Summer Film Institute.
The toys donated benefit the Salvation Army Transitional Living Center and other families in need. Continue reading →
*We adore Viola Davis. Not only because she is one of those rare finds in an actress; one that’s not afraid to cry the ugly cry in her roles; she’s a fearless and gracious woman in real time — one who speaks powerful words on all ears willing to listen.
Davis has weighed in on the mounds of sexual assault cases currently in the news and told Yahoo Lifestyle she’s “tired of pretending that sexual assault in Hollywood is news.”
We have to create an environment where shame doesn’t exist.–Viola Davis
Davis spoke candidly with Yahoo Lifestyle at a recent brand launch for which she is an ambassador. She said that she?s ?done? pretending that sexual assault in Hollywood is ?news.?
But the Harvey Weinstein scandal is not the first time that the actress has spoken out about sexual abuse and assault. In 2016, while appearing at a Stuart House fundraiser event (scroll down for video), she gave a haunting account about her sister’s rape experience. Continue reading →
*Yes, Amanda. You can see a movie a day for $10 a month with MoviePass.
Still not clear? Let me break it down for you. Once the MoviePass fully-loaded debit card is in your hot little hands, you can see Blade Runner on Monday, The Mountain Between Us on Tuesday, Flatliners on Wednesday…
…and by now you should more than get my drift.
No wonder the high-priced AMC Theater chain is working overtime to block consumers from this subscription-based service. But unfortunately for them, they aren’t working hard enough.
MoviePass is a legit service aiming to bring folks back into the movie theaters with a quickness.
Woo Hoo! This will definitely affect my moviegoing habits!
Here, dear readers, is everything you need to know about the service you may not have yet.Continue reading →
