Linus Phillip Jr., 30, was recently pulled over by police for a traffic stop at the Wawa gas station. He was pulled over for having heavily tinted windows, but the car he was driving was a rental car. He provided the officers with the necessary paperwork, but the problem seemed to arise when the officer said he smelled marijuana.
When police told him they were going to search his car, according to their press release, Phillip jumped into the drivers seat and attempted to flee,
One of the officers, identified as Matt Steiner, hung on to the car, and when Phillip put it in reverse and accelerated, well, you can probably finish writing the story from here.
The officer said he feared for his life and blah. Blah. Blah.
Bottom line, Phillips was shot four times by the officer and ended up dead.
The police department issued a press release calling the homicide “justifiable.”
According to a report in The Root, officers say Phillip had marijuana, crack cocaine, powdered cocaine, hydromorphone pills and more than $1,500 in cash in his pockets at the time of the fatal police shooting.
But here is where audacity comes in. Officers claim the footage they reviewed at the gas station was “limited” and doesn’t show the actual encounter between the cops and Phillip. Because of this, and under the guise of further “investigation” they decided to go to the funeral home where the deceased is, and attempt to unlock his phone by using his finger.
According to ABC News, the attorney representing the family of Linus Phillip Jr. confirmed that two detectives went to the funeral home days before Phillip?s funeral service and held his hand up to his iPhone?s fingerprint sensor in the cold storage at the funeral home. However, attorney John Trevena said the attempt was not successful.
?Nobody even calling us from the facility to let us know detectives were coming there at all is very disturbing,? Victoria Armstrong, Phillip’s girlfriend and the mother of his two children said. ?I?m very skeptical of all funeral homes now.?
?So they are allowed to pull him out of the refrigerator and use a dead man?s finger to get to his phone? It?s disgusting,? she told ABC affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa Bay, Fla. ?We are fighting to find out what happened.?
The Largo Police Department declined to go into detail about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.
?The case is still presently active, however, sometime in the near future, the investigation should be concluded and the report will be available for any public records requests,? a spokesperson for the police department said.
Nonetheless, Phillip?s loved ones are furious at the insult that was added to the irreversible injury.
