A Winans Who Doesn’t Want To Sing??? Deborah Joy Shines On OWN’s Greenleaf

*Can you imagine a member of the Jackson family who didn’t want to sing? (Even LaToya tried.) How about a Bush or Clinton who didn’t want to be president? (Too soon?)

Deborah Joy Winans, one of gospel music’s Winans dynasty and one of the breakout stars of OWN’s Greenleaf, never wanted to sing. She spent decades eschewing it, in fact, in favor of acting.

I know — it’s hard to believe.  Heck, that family even had singing in-laws!

As the superb series’ first season prepares to wrap up next week, and OWN releases an accompanying soundtrack album, I had to catch up with Winans and ask her about this “no singing” thing.

“My dad [Carvin Winans, one of the original Winans group] and mom never wanted to force us into the singing thing,” Winans, 32, told me. “They wanted us to find our own path. Singing was just never a passion. Since I was a little girl, I felt that acting was what I was called to do.”

Winans acted on that calling, ultimately earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in theater. As she performed in workshops playing CeCe Winans for the stage play Born For This, Winans caught the eye of a woman in the audience who would guide her towards God’s purpose for her life — and her own heart’s desire.

“I was at a point of asking God whether acting was what He really wanted me to do,” Winans recalled. “Oprah Winfrey came to one of my workshops, and a couple of months later she reached out to Uncle BeBe, who co-wrote Born For This. Oprah told him she was interested in me for the role of “Charity” on Greenleaf, and asked him to help her contact me.” Continue reading

TV Station Suspends Female Anchors, Orders Them To Lose Weight

*They say the camera adds 10 pounds, and that everyone looks a little…healthier on TV.  Egypt’s state broadcaster thinks it’s more than the camera for eight of its female anchors, and has suspended them and ordered them to lose weight!

The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) has given the women just one month to take off the pounds before allowing them to appear again on air with what they say will be “appropriate appearance.”

Interestingly, the ERTU has a female director, Safaa Hegazy, who used a be TV anchor!

Lest you ask, yes, Hegazy is what many in the US would call a “skinny beeeatch.”   I think she looks like Sally Field, but anyway… Continue reading

Oprah Talks ‘Aging Gracefully’: Shows ‘Curvaceous’ New Figure On June Cover of O Magazine

O Cover, Aging gracefully*Oprah, we couldn’t have said it better! You look marvelous darling.

Flaunting her curves and booty on the cover of the June issue of  O Magazine, the one and only Oprah Winfrey celebrates her milestone 60th birthday and how grateful she is for the opportunity because, as she so eloquently states, it only happens once.

Oprah opens up about aging gracefully in a society that views getting older with fear.

“Call me crazy, but I’ve never really understood our culture’s fear of getting older,” Winfrey tells the mag. “The way I see it, every year can be a brand new journey. Think about it: You get one chance to be 25, 38, 44, 61 and every age before and between. Why wouldn’t you want to experience all the wonder in each step on your path?”

According to Oprah, aging is a blessing, not a curse. Continue reading

Oprah Literally Gives Woman the Clothes Off Her Back…Because She Asked!

Bet you are kind of wishing you’d asked for this lovely dress.

*It may be one of the toughest things to do sometimes, but if you’ve got the nerve to sum up the gumption to ask for what you want, you just might get it.

Just talk to Brandi, the Atlanta woman who was so smitten by the dress Oprah wore on the “Bravo” Collector’s Edition cover of Essence.

In a Twitter blast to the media mogul, she went on this whole “I know you’ll never wear the dress again” rant, finally asking Oprah to just give her the dress, probably laughing the whole time, never expecting to hear more.

But then she did…from Oprah herself! Continue reading

Oprah Experiments with Her Inner ‘Wild Thang’ for September Cover of ‘O’

Oprah sports a 3.5 pound afro on the cover of her September issue of O magazine.

Everyone knows that Oprah likes to switch things up.  She’s been fat, skinny, medium, large, long hair, short hair, curly hair, this is “my hair” and drove that point home using Chris Rock to run his fingers through her hair on her show.  But now, it would be pretty difficult to prove.

On Oprah’s September cover, she’s sporting hair so big, Leela James would be jealous!  The 3.5 pound mane is the center of an article titled “Let’s talk about HAIR!”  Oprah went so big that the hair has taken on a life of its own and they’ve nicknamed the ‘fro “Wild Thang.”  Even her friend Gayle has joked her saying, “Can someone put on the soundtrack to ‘The Lion King?'” according to the New York Daily News.

Oprah wants everyone to know that she definitely isn’t claiming this wig as her own hair and, even though she has had the privilege of having her own stylist for nearly 30 years, Andre Walker, she has the same issues as every other Black Girl that Rocks! Continue reading

Oliver Stone Told Jamie Foxx ‘You Can’t Act!’ (Video)

Jamie Foxx discusses his humble beginnings in the acting world with Oprah.

The new “Django Unchained” film by Quentin Tarantino is getting a lot of buzz in award circles, but the lead role is being played by Jamie Foxx…and according to Oliver Stone, he can’t act!

At least that’s what he once thought of the comedian gone actor whose career was steeped in Television before working with Stone on “Any Given Sunday.” Audiences across America first became enamored with Jamie Foxx when he hit the national stage on the skit comedy show “In Living Color”.

But Foxx admits to Oprah during their upcoming two-part interview on OWN December 16 and 23, he had to really work hard to get that gig Continue reading
