 The headline may say that Obama is over in Europe fighting for the rights of black Frenchmen, but that’s our bad.  It’s just so hard to tell the difference between this man and our President.  There is an organization, CRAN, fighting against the racial profiling of France’s black citizens and it seems they felt they’d be a little more convincing to the powers that be if they hired an Obama look-a-like.  Once again the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is in question even after Bush and Congress, in 2006, voted to reinstate it another 25 years.  But there’s still another group challenging Section 5 of the Act and the Supreme Court has agreed to listen.  The United States Department of Justice defines Section 5 as:

“Section 5 freezes election practices or procedures in certain states until the new procedures have been subjected to review, either after an administrative review by the United States Attorney General, or after a lawsuit before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. This means that voting changes in covered jurisdictions may not be used until that review has been obtained.”

Cell phone use is really out of control.  If I have to swerve from someone who is letting their car drift into my lane because they’re completely absorbed in conversation one more time this week, I’m going to lose it.  I remember when some people made a big stink out of cell phones being used in restaurants.  That doesn’t bother me, but what does is someone unwittingly preparing to take my life in a car accident.

It seems like we hear Detroit on the news every single day as it faces crisis after crisis.  The hope is eeking out the city with unemployment sky high, over 80 schools closing, the Mayor being incarcerated, and the Big 3 facing bankruptcy.  In such a crunch, it’s obvious that the residents would be desperate for opportunity, even if they have to create them on their own.

 Children have long heard stories of dragons and unimaginable beasts in their fairytales and movies of fantasy.  But then as adults, we see real monsters that no one ever explained were real and were nothing like the images we heard about and saw on screen.

Last night was the Golden Globes and all of the beautiful people were out in full effect.  The Golden Globes are by far one of my favorite “mainstream” award ceremonies because it is very relaxed and the award recipients will say just about anything.  However, I don’t watch the Globes for the speeches.  I watch to see who looks a hot mess but y’all know how I do.  (more…)
