*A group of four or five teens ages 14-16, high on marijuana, stood at a Florida lake and mocked a man screaming for help before he finally drowned. There they stood, all of them laughing, as one of them videotaped the scene on a cellphone.
We hear different voices. One asks, “He got in the water?”
Another responds: “Yeah he just got in.”
Then they start taunting him, all of them laughing as they scream, “Git out the water you gon’ die! “You’re a junkie!” “I see a gator coming towards you!”
The video is disturbing as hell. The thought that human beings can have such low value for life; that they would just stand there and not only watch someone suffer, but laugh as it happens. I’m not even going to blame their response on the fact that they were high from marijuana because weed doesn’t make someone behave this way.
People are who they are.
“We not fittin’ to help yo’ ass!” one yells. The camera is at times unsteady. No surprise there. But we can see the man’s head bobbing up and under the water, and the surrounding pool of water shows he is struggling.
“They [sic] drownin’ what the heck,” another very stoned sounding guy muses.”
“Yeah, buddy off that 40.” ”
Hey, where he at?” one asks as the man submerges under water.
“He got in there with all his clothes on. He keeps putting his head under, wow.”
The sickening video goes on for 2:39 minutes.
Jamel Dunn, 32, drowned in that retention pond in Cocoa, Florida on July 9. His body was discovered three days later, and it was only then that the video surfaced on social media showing his last moments, according to Florida Today.

?The kids were at the park that day smoking marijuana and apparently saw him walk into the water. He walked in on his own. They were watching him,? said Yvonne Martinez, Cocoa Police Department spokesperson. According to the authorities, the teens had told Dunn not to go into the water.
Police were notified about the video when a family friend of Dunn, who has two daughters, saw the footage on social media.
Authorities interviewed the teens, and although they are not expected to charge them with any crime, they do say their actions had ?no moral justification.?
?While the incident depicted on the recording does not give rise to sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution under Florida statutes, we can find no moral justification for either the behavior of persons heard on the recording or the deliberate decision not to render aid to Mr. Dunn,? the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney?s Office said in a statement.
Police say the teens showed no emotion whatsoever.
?There was no remorse, only a smirk,? Martinez said.
This writer suspects one day, when these boys get older, and hopefully wiser, they will have their “Come to Jesus moment” and say they’re sorry and want forgiveness. And they may get it. But unfortunately for them, there’s this big, little thing called Karma that will not be denied.
Karma: The ‘effect’ that simply must take place after a ’cause’ is made. That cause can be an action, an inaction, or even a thought. And the ‘effect’ can be immediate or not. But its like a circle; its the Law of the world and it must complete. There is no way around it.
These teens may be laughing now, but how will they sleep later?Crime or no crime, something tells me their identities will not be secret forever. What they did…or didn’t do in this case, should haunt them for the rest of their lives.
