*Children and adults alike will enjoy going to the Pasadena Playhouse this holiday season. Why? I thought you’d never ask. ‘A Cinderella Christmas’ will not only bring you face to face with the story of a handsome prince who falls in love with a homely maiden; but the classic fairy tale is updated to include music by some of today’s hottest stars such as Bruno Mars (“24K Magic),” Meghan Trainor (“Me Too”), Michael Bublé (“Just Haven’t Met You Yet”), Ed Sheeran (“Thinking Out Loud”) and Kelly Clarkson (“Breakaway).
The Lythgoe Family production of this beloved tale is even more enjoyable because it’s done panto-style. Not only do audiences get to participate in what’s happening onstage; but the tongue-in-cheek, hilarious references made to the show’s locale – “It’s snowing in Pasadena,” and the moniker of The Ugly Stepsisters being the name of Hollywood’s most famous intersection, “Hollywood” and “Vine” is priceless.
The Lythgoe Family (‘American Idol’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance’) is also known for producing light, fun theatre that families can enjoy. And on this night, a spirited Becky Lythgoe came onstage to greet theatre goers; including the many children in the audience who had a ball following the directions from a character named Buttons (played delightfully by Matthew Patrick Davis) who instructs them to shout an enthusiastic, “Hi Buttons!” whenever he appears; and to “Boo” the Ugly Stepsisters whenever they enter.
On opening night, December 8, the cast was on fire, with outstanding performances by Alex Newell (Fox’s ‘Glee,”) as The Fairy Godmother, Davi Santos (Nickelodeon’s “Power Rangers Dino Charge”) as the prince’s trusty sidekick, Dandini, and The Ugly Stepsisters’ Josh Adamson (ABC Family’s “First Landing”) and Ben Giroux (Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger”); who work exceptionally well together and are a hoot every time they’re onstage.
Lauren Taylor (Disney Channel’s ‘Best Friends Whenever’) and Kenton Duty (Disney Channel’s ‘Shake It Up’) play well together as Cinderella and The Prince.
Newell brings the house down with his voice on several occasions.
This is the 5th year for Panto at the Pasadena Playhouse, where previous performances included the world premier of ‘Peter Pan and Tinker Bell — A Pirates Christmas’ starring Sabrina Carpenter and John O’Hurley, ‘Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight’ which starred Olivia Holt and Lucy Lawless, ‘A Snow White Christmas’ starring Ariana Grande and Neil Patrick Harris and Ben Vereen in ‘Aladdin and His Winter Wish’ along with Jordan Fisher and Ashley Argota.
All guests of the theatre, along with their families, are also invited to enjoy a “Winter Wonderland” event in The Playhouse’s beautiful Engemann Family Courtyard free of charge. Here they will delight to activities, games, crafts; and on select dates, Santa Claus will be in attendance to take photos.
They even have a Princess/Prince salon by Rock Your Hair where, for a nominal fee, you can get the latest Royal style before the show!
