*I’ve always wondered about the real people behind the face on some of the most famous TV commercials. Honestly, I really wondered if they were millionaires now? I mean, we know people like Jared Fogel — who made millions as the face of Subway for decades after losing a massive amount of weight — has now been revealed as a pedophile, and his legacy is now revised as he serves a sizeable amount of time in prison. But what about ‘Lily’ from AT&, ‘Flo’ from Progressive Insurance, and the ‘can you hear me now guy’ from Verizon?
And then there’s that lady who does all of those ‘Thrive’ voiceovers for Kaiser Permanente.
You may be shocked to find out who she is.
These folks are now like our relatives, we’ve become so accustomed to seeing them on TV or hearing them on the radio, We know their faces or voice so well.
The some of these commercial campaigns have updated or upgraded, you may want to meet some of the real people behind the faces and voices that became imprinted in our psyche.
So I did a little digging.
PINE-SOL LADY – Diane Amos (Above)
The Pine-Sol Lady’s real name is Diane Amos, and if she looks familiar to you it’s for a very good reason – she’s also been in a huge number of wildly popular movies like “Patch Adams,” “Sweet November” and one of the better movies that Woody Allen has made in the last 20 years, “Blue Jasmine.”
VERIZON’S ‘CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW’ GUY – Paul Marcarelli
Verizon’s “Can You Hear Me Now” commercials are one of those advertising campaigns that transcended the product they were trying to sell – a lot of people use the phrase without realizing it’s from a commercial at all. The face of those commercials, Paul Marcarelli, who is now becoming prominent with another phone company, is also an actor and movie producer, doing a lot of work in documentaries like “The Royal Road.”
PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE’S ‘FLO’ — Stephanie Courtney
‘Flo’ has got to be among the most famous faces on commercial TV. Stephanie Courtney seems to be literally everywhere as the Progressive Insurance character. She’s also been in a number of different television shows like “Men of a Certain Age” and is a member of the improvisational sketch group “The Groundlings.”
Beck Bennett is someone who is widely known to anyone who considers themselves to be a true fan of comedy in its many forms. Not only did he appear on the cult sitcom “Arrested Development,” but he also happens to be a current cast member on a little show that you may have heard of called “Saturday Night Live.”
Edith Fore rose to fame as the original older lady (who actually has a name – Mrs. Fletcher. Who knew!) in those “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” commercials. After she died in 1997, she was replaced first by Dorothy McHugh and later by Bea Marcus.
Old Spice’s commercials are so popular that they’ve even started playing them in movie theaters at this point. In addition to being an actor, Isaiah Mustafa was also a practice squad wide receiver for the NFL at one point in his career. Not too shabby for the Man Your Man Could Smell Like.
Milana Vayntrub has been in a huge number of popular television shows over the years, appearing on such hits as “ER,” the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” and “Lizzie McGuire.”
