*A single father who was looking for love on the online dating site, Plenty of Fish, was found dead on his kitchen floor after he went out on a date with an 18-year-old girl who it was later learned, had set him up for a robbery.
His murder may have been a last minute decision.
27-year-old Adam Hilarie met 18-year-old Hailey Bustos via Plenty of Fish, an online dating site. The two went bowling on their first date. After the date the pair went back to Hilarie’s house, and upon parting, Bustos texted: “I had a good time and would like to see you again.”
The agreement turned out to be a grave mistake.
They set up a meet at Hilarie’s place for the next night. But instead of arriving alone, the girl brought three friends with her.
Cops said 18-year-old Hailey Bustos had been paid $50 to arrange the theft of Hilarie’s TVs, Xbox and iPhone, and returned hours later for the robbery with the three men.
The incident escalated.
“Hilarie was begging for his life, he was not putting up any kind of fight, and was telling them that he had a 5-year-old daughter,” according to a police report obtained by The Sentinel.
Bustos, a repeat offender, was later arrested on a separate burglary charge on Sunday in Winterhaven after police were tipped off by someone who had seen her go out with Hilarie, according to Deputy Chief Andy Ray. She, along with co-conspirators Andre Warner, 26, Joshua Ellington, 26, and Gary Gray, 31, were jailed on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm and conspiracy to commit murder.
Ray said of Bustos, who still had evidence from the Hilarie robbery in her car when she was caught: “More than anything, it was just her comfort with the way this went.”
Hilarie’s 5-year-old daughter was clearly the love of his life, as he posted photos on Facebook saying so.
“She’s only 5 and, my god, she’s not going to really see how great of a guy he real is,” Angel Cruz, Hilarie’s brother, told Fox 13, about his brother who was also an aspiring boxer.
This is especially hurtful due to the rarity of single-fatherhood that is publicized. The men who have stepped-up to take charge of the human beings they helped bring into this world is in short supply. And now, when we learn of one, who was obviously looking for someone to share his life with…something like this happens.
Sometimes life is just not fair.
In the video, Detective Ray says, “I think the plan was he get robbed and they take his stuff. I’m not sure why the shooting occurred,” he concludes.
No one deserves this. I hope these killers get exactly what they deserve!
The victims brother says although he is hopeful that people will learn from this, he “hates that my brother” had to be the one to show us all the lesson.
Rest in peace, Adam. Our entire TNT community is wrapping our collective arms around your little girl and the family you leave behind.
