*And now these same officers are being investigated. According to the CBS2 news report, some are calling the traffic stop turned marriage proposal indecent. Yehuda Coriat and his girlfriend, Sorah Oppen, were pulled over by not two, but three police officers from the the 101st precinct in Far Rockaway, New York, as their friends, unbeknownst to at least the woman, sat in another car recording and commenting on the scene.
The NYPD, however, didn’t think it was cute at all and announced on Monday that the officers involved are under investigation.
I wonder if this would have been the result if the three officers weren’t Black.
Yeah. I said it!
According to the New York Post the couple was pulled over under the pretense of their car being searched for weapons and drugs. A video shows the officers briefly searching the car as the “nervous couple” stands by. But once the trunk is popped, out comes a barrage of balloons, flowers and inside…a wedding ring.
Coriat told the media that he had previously gone into the precinct to ask the officers for help in proposing to his girlfriend, and that they were initially supposed to be off duty. But according to what NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a press conference on Monday, those officers may have actually been on duty at the time.
“Was it an on-duty or off-duty incident? Was department equipment involved? What was the origin of it?” Bratton said. “So we just don’t have that information at this time. They could face discipline if it was found that their behavior was inappropriate.”
In an interview with the Post, Oppen praised the officers for playing along.
“[The officers] weren’t on duty at the time,” she said. “They did [Coriat] a favor. They came in, dressed up, got the car and did the whole getup just as a favor.”
Watch the video below. This was a good thing. And I hope these officers are found innocent of any wrongdoing.
