*Thanks to Dr. Boyce Watkins, we get to meet Ohemaa Zaid, who works collaboratively with SEHAH Youth and Fitness Center (Survival. Education.
Health and African History), an organization that takes youth (called Youth Ambassadors) to Africa annually to learn fighting techniques and connect with their original cultures.
This year, the trip, which takes place August 1-16th, will take the children throughout Ethiopia, where they will witness the customs they have been learning about all year.
Money for the annual trip is raised during a showcase, which not only serves as a fundraiser, but also introduces Houston’s local talent and at the same time entertains with cultural dances, a martial arts exhibition and spoken word.
This year, the fundraiser was held at the Sankofa Vendor Market at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural and Event Center in Houston, and the funds will support the travelers’ airfare and ground expenses.
