*Will it EVER be “enough?”
I’ve been beating up on myself all day. Not unlike many of us, I am my own worst critic. No matter how hard I work, it never seems to be hard enough. No matter how much money I bring in, some bills will still go unpaid. No matter what I do, in the eyes of some, it will never be enough.
Sometimes, for a single moment at least, I wonder why bother?
But then I realize: I bother because in the whole scheme of things, when “enough” is actually accomplished, it will probably be time for me to exit this place.
And I don’t plan to do that anytime soon.
Which is why I decided to pen this article, which will show much more than tell. I’ve heard some complaints that white folks are not doing enough to change the narrative on Black injustice. And I am not here to say whether this complaint is legitimate or not. But I would like to ask those people, what would ENOUGH look like?
It’s kind of like counting someone else’s money. You assume they can afford to contribute to your cause just because, by all appearances, they look like they can.
You’d have to be practically brain-dead not realize our country is in some real deep doo-doo right now. Police openly killing Black folk and getting away with it; and it seems when President Obama was elected racists crawled out of the woodwork like roaches.
Still, I learned a long time ago, you can’t assume anything.
So here’s a question for you:
What about the white folks who ARE trying to step up…in their own way? The one’s who actually loathe the acts of their forefathers, and are making attempts to be the change they’d like to see…Yet they are being told that what they are doing is…not ENOUGH?
It’s so easy to stand on one side of a fence and tell someone in the other yard what THEY should do. If the shoe were on the other foot, can you honestly say that YOU would do what you are expecting of them?
Are YOU really qualified to dictate what ENOUGH looks like?
It took centuries for us to get to where we are now.
It may not take centuries to undo it, but it will still take time.
What does ENOUGH look like, and how would YOU feel if people you are attempting to support said this to you.
