*Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? The racial divide is wider than ever now, what with the heightened tensions between the men in blue and Black folk. As if African Americans and other Black folk being killed in cold blood by police — seemingly with little to no provocation — wasn’t enough, now it is the police who have begun to find themselves facing the barrel of a bullets escape.
Good lord! How on earth did we get here?
Now the idea has been introduced to consider the thought of a “Blacks Only” nation. Or it might be more accurate to say, REconsider; seeing as “there are large sections of the United States that have nothing but black people in them already,” according to what Christian Davenport, a University of Michigan political science professor told the Atlanta Black Star during an interview. “There are cults and militias as well as private corporations that do whatever they want behind their closed doors” Davenport added, saying, “The idea of Black folk coming together thus does not seem that difficult to me.”
Davenport also recalled the efforts of the militant group the Black Republic of New Africa who, in 1968, made an attempt to form such a nation and get $10,000 in reparation payments for each Black American in the process.
According to Davenport, the Black only sections are areas where the government “can no longer maintain control.”
He continues, “The Republic of New Africa actually had several innovative ways to seek territorial control. One involved something akin to electoral empowerment whereby Blacks would get individuals elected who would, in turn, deputize and otherwise bring in members of the RNA to govern. Another involved something akin to stepping into situations of state failure. Here, the RNA would find locales where the U.S. government has basically stepped out and/or can no longer maintain control. The RNA had the idea of stepping into this vacuum,” he said. “Now, the difficult part becomes arming that nation in an organized fashion and getting recognition from the United States as well as other nations. This is where the difficulty will come from.”
A Jet Magazine report states, the Republic of New Africa’s mission would include the following states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. The new nation would also separate Florida from the rest of the country.
