*You’ve heard the saying, human friends will come and go, but a dog’s love is forever. Well one dog have proven this is not just some cliche. As a matter of fact, many hearts were broken after neighbors learned about the German Shepherd who sat on the front steps of the apartment complex — where he had lived with his 54-year-old owner — for two whole weeks, waiting for that owner to return.
The dog had no idea he never would.
Hatem Abuharbid, the dog’s owner, had been killed during a robbery at the convenience store where he worked on February 7.
Abuharbid was shot in the thigh when two men robbed the Kay-B convenience store in Houston, police said in a press release. The bullet pierced an artery in his leg and Abuharbid later died at the hospital.
“You could just tell that he was a lost dog,” neighbor Cassandra Eubanks, who lives nearby, told ABC owned station KTRK in Houston.
“He would follow the cars and when he would realize that it was not his owner’s car, he would just stand there and look helpless,” Eubanks added.
But at least the little doggie was shown some love, as neighbors started to bring and water; even though he would not let anyone get near him.
Maranda Perez spoke to KTRK after she answered a plea to help the dog on social media. She told the media it took at least an hour to gain the dog’s trust. And she used her own dog to coax the confused dog in their direction. She said the dog ran up three flights of stairs before she was able to get close enough to put a leash on him.
“He was still very shaken up whenever I touched him,” she said.
Perez plans to keep the dog for a week and then will hand him over to the deceased man’s brother, who has shown an interest in adopting him.
