*Most of us have some work to do after the holiday eating frenzy. Spring will be here before we know it, and for some of us, if we don’t act with some urgency, the warm weather will bring the reality that last year’s clothes just don’t fit like they used to. Even more importantly, many of us know that we could make far healthier choices for ourselves and those who love us.
Just in time for New Year’s resolutions, fitness trainer Shaun T is hosting the new My Diet Is Better Than Yours, airing Thursdays at 8pm on ABC throughout the month of January. The program is one of this year’s mid-season replacements, and it’s one of the best health and fitness-related shows I’ve ever seen. The network has ordered eight one-hour episodes, which are airing in two-hour blocks throughout the month.
My Diet Is Better Than Yours isn’t your run-of-the-mill weight loss program. The show follows a group of celebrity trainers as they coach fat folks looking to lose some of those excess pounds. Each trainer employs a unique workout and diet plan to help their assigned contestant lose as much weight as possible in a predetermined timeframe. At the end of each episode, contestants have an opportunity to fire their trainer, if they’re not happy with the way things are going. Contests vie for a $50,000 grand prize.
I can’t think of a better host for the new show than Shaun T, who is the genius behind the wildly popular “Insanity” workout regimen and is a staple on late night informercials.
That said, Shaun T told me that hosting My Diet Is Better Than Yours has been a learning experience for him.
“I’m used to talking directly to the camera,” Shaun explained, describing the process of filming his ubiquitous videos. “I’m used to looking at the camera and connecting to the viewer at home, so for me to see myself not looking at the camera and bringing people into this world was something that I definitely got more comfortable with as we went along.”
For the record, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who’s more authentic. Shaun T is EXACTLY the person we’ve come to know from his infomercials and videos. I’ll never forget my first interview with him, as he graced the cover of Men’s Health magazine, his advising me to give up my quest for abs like HIS and start the quest for abs like MINE. He emphasized that he encourages his clients to develop their OWN best body.
After My Diet Is Better Than Yours’ premiere, I had to ask Shaun what viewers have to look forward to for the rest of the series.
“You guys saw the tip of the iceberg,” he excitedly shared. “Some stuff goes down over the next few weeks that will make your jaws drop! That’s really all I can say — but you will see what it’s like when people go through a weight loss journey. You’re not going to see some fitness model come out of this show. You’re going to see a real person with real weight loss, sustainable results and longterm health. You’re gonna see joy and happiness in people’s lives — but you’re also going to see some stuff that will make you say “Oh. My. GOD!”
