* Andree Willy, 43 and Chermisa Wheeler, 38, plead guilty to drug trafficking charges in a Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday so its safe to assume they won’t be spending Thanksgiving at home.
The women were caught after acting “suspiciously” as they boarded a plane at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Wednesday, and the authorities found cocaine in their private parts.
Willy and Wheeler, who reportedly became emotional as the charges against them were being read, actually faced separate charges.
According to what the prosecutor told the court, the women were departing passengers at the airport in Guyana – where they had arrived a week earlier on vacation. But agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit noticed them behaving in a suspicious manner as they approached the airport security scanner. And that is what led to the search and the subsequent discovery – which was wrapped in plastic measuring up to eight inches long. Ouch!
Magistrate Judy Latchman read the charges and the sentences for the women were handed down as follows:
Wheeler was sentenced to 48 months in jail and fined G$79,200 for her attempt to conceal a little over 3 ounces of cocaine. Willy was sentenced to 50 months in jail and fined G$268,200 for her efforts to conceal 10 ounces of cocaine.
Needless to say, neither of these women will enjoy happy holidays for at least 4 years to come.
