*A brother gets tired after a while. Real tired!
And one brother is so fed up he has given up his place in America out of fear, and has asked for asylum…in Canada of all places. He cites brutality from American police as the reason.
Kyle Lydell Canty, 38, testified in front of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board on October 26 because he is fearful of remaining in the United States and would like to make Canada his home.
His fears are for his life in America, “…because I’m black.”
Canty represented himself when he spoke to the Board and even spoke to CBC News saying,
“They’re consistently killing black people, it’s documented, the United Nations has condemned America for their racial disparities for their police brutality. And honestly, I kept on getting harassed by cops for no reason, false charges, false arrests — I’m not just the only one going through it. All black people in America are going through the same thing. It’s corruption.”
Canty revealed he has been harassed by police in all of the 6 states he has lived in; and says he has been falsely arrested on charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct, among others.
The last straw seems to have come when he was arrested recently in Salem, Oregon for trespassing because he reportedly used free wifi at the bus station for two hours. It was then that he decided to come to Vancouver and stay in a homeless shelter.
Let’s hope Canada works out for the brother. I know some folks whose brow will be raised at that choice but, as they say, that is a story for another day.
