*Marcus Bradley had been driving a Lowe’s delivery truck for the past 11-years. So when he got a call by management while making a routine delivery last week, asking him to return to the warehouse with the shipment, he asked why. The reason, according to the manager, was because the white female customer did not want a black person delivering anything to her home.
When Bradley returned to the store, he was replaced by a white driver.
Ignorance is far and wide, and though we witness it every day in the behavior of different individuals in the form of racial intolerance; it still comes as a surprise when its taken on by a business. Because so much more is involved: money for one, customers for another, and then there is a little thing called reputation.
Which is why businesses have to really stay on top of their business practices, and realize that training is essential, and placing the right people in leadership roles is paramount.
Bradley told ABC affiliate WSET that he didn’t expect his employer to accept the customer’s demand.
“I mean, I thought that Lowe’s would take up for me,” he said.
And so did his fellow delivery driver, Alex Brooks, a white man who was sitting next to Bradley when the call to return to the store came in.
“To me, it just ain’t right for a business that we work at to go on with the woman’s wishes,” Brooks told WSET.
Brooks told the station he refused to get back in the truck and complete the delivery without his longtime partner.
“It was one of those things like, ‘These guys will get over it. They’re tough guys, they’re delivery guys and that’s kind of where I just had to put my foot down and say I couldn’t do it with them,” said Brooks.
Thank goodness for common decency. Lowe’s corporate headquarters agreed that there is no place for racism in their business practices. And the manager who made the dumb judgement call has since been fired.
