*Damn you! Is what many former patients, their family members, friends, and online bloggers alike are saying about a doctor who was so greedy that he prescribed more than 2000 ‘unnecessary’ rounds of chemotherapy to his patients.
Even the 45-year prison sentence for 50-year-old Farid Fata doesn’t begin to address restitution.
Many of these deeply and permanently wounded individuals now live with chronic pain, unrelenting fatigue and joint weakness and missing teeth.
While others have lost their lives.
And these are just some of the claims that victims of this ‘doctor’ – a title I can’t even type to describe this loser, brought about at his sentencing trial this week for administering the unnecessary chemo treatments.
Fata admitted to misdiagnosing and exposing his cancer patients to the unnecessary chemotherapy so that he could collect payments from them and their insurance companies.
His defense had advocated for a 25-year-sentence, but Fata was given 45 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Paul Borman.
That’s considered a mercy sentence when you look at the 175-year maximum sentence the prosecution had requested.
Fata’s greedy scam made him $34.7 million in payments and affected approximately 550 people.
And if we can just take a moment to think about this; because nearly everyone knows someone who has died or is living with some form of caner. To know that this man purposefully misdiagnosed these people and had them endure the horrific affects of chemotherapy makes him nothing higher than repulsive.
And the $17.6 million he says he will return doesn’t even begin to change that repulsiveness.
Fata’s attorney had previously requested a lesser sentence, making the insulting justification for the request that anything over 25 years would result in death because his client has health issues.
He concluded this ridiculous request by asking that he be able to “see light of day before he goes.”
Court reporters say at the time this request was being made, Fata was standing next to his attorney, and appeared to be crying.
“I do not know how I can heal the wound. I do not know how to express the sorrow and the shame,” Fata said to victims and families as he addressed the court prior to his sentencing. “The quest for power is self-destructive. They came to me seeking compassion and care. I failed. Yes, I failed,” he said, according to Detroit’s Channel 4.
This so-called doctor had previously plead guilty to “13 counts of health care fraud, two counts of money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks,” according to the Detroit Free Press.
And according to Dr. Soe Maunglay, who was hired by Fata in 2012 and blew the whistle on him after he reviewed patient records that revealed some of these patients never even showed evidence of having cancer at all.
Fata’s former patients, and the loved ones of those who had passed, had a chance to speak in court this week.
“Farid Fata, I hate you,” said Laura Stedtfeld, whose father passed away while under Fata’s medical care, according to US News & World Report. “You are repulsive. You disgust me. You are a monster. … You poisoned, tortured, and murdered my dad.”
And former patient Christopher Sobieray said, “Look at what’s left of my mouth — I have one tooth left. They had no idea how I was sitting in their office. … I will never be the same,” he added.
Fata had doctors shaking their heads in horror after he was exposed and they learned of his massive over-treatment for testicular cancer.
