*You can’t blame the mom for hoping this won’t be news one day. But until that day comes, this rarity will make headlines.
When a white cop gets down on his knees at one o’clock in the morning, to tend to the blown out tires of a young black man’s Mercedes–without questioning if the car is his–that’s news!
And this young man’s mother was so grateful to that officer, she posted it on social media.
And it went viral.
According to what Nada Owusu told The Huffington Post, her gratitude for the Virginia State Trooper that treated her son with the kind of respect a young black man is not otherwise accustomed to, sparked a response she did not expect on social media.
Owusu, who lives in Danville, said she wanted to share her appreciation for Matt Okes, a state trooper who came to the aide of her 20-year-old son, Joseph, after the Virginia Tech student’s tire blew out late Thursday night.
Owusu wrote online that even after the officer’s efforts to repair the tire failed, he stayed with her son “all night” until Triple A arrived. He also used the headlights on his patrol car to alert other drivers about the distressed vehicle.
Then, after Triple A arrived, the state trooper drove slowly behind Joseph to ensure everything was OK.
Sure enough, a country in need to hearing acts of humanity by police, after all the bad publicity lately, ate it up. And the news took Owusu’s photo viral–to the tune of 22,000 shares.
“I wasn’t trying to create this kind of reaction,” she said. “I was sincerely trying to express my gratitude. I was not expecting a nationwide response.”
Owusu does say that she hopes for a day when a story about a white officer helping a black man won’t get any attention.
“It will be the norm,” she said. “It will be something we expect.”
Amen to that, sister!
