Hey, we know its nobody’s “fault” when a person falls on hard times, but damn, whatever happened to compassion? There just seems to be is something intrinsically wrong when someone is evicted from the home they’ve occupied and invested in for thirty years. And for the eviction to be based on a penalty that states you can be kicked out of a living space that has more bedrooms than deemed necessary is kind of, well, insulting.
But it happened, and as a result a man (and his father) who had occupied a four-bedroom-house for three decades ended up homeless and was forced to spend the cold winter months in a tent that left one of them severely disabled.
Mitchell Keenan, 32, was diagnosed with frostbite six weeks ago after his family rushed him to the hospital after they discovered his blackened toes. (Scroll down if you want to see the disgusting photos).
Mitchell and his 62-year-old father Keith had a four-bedroom home in Birch Green, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, but fell on hard times last year and got behind on their payments.
The father was also diagnosed with severe health problems that included being malnourished, scabies and dementia.
It was Keith’s sister, Dawn Doyle, 54, who pitched in and helped buy the men the tent after she was unsuccessful in finding shelter for them.
“They had their benefits sanctioned and things just spiraled out of control,” she said. “They both have neurological conditions and disabilities and kept missing job interviews, so the problem got worse and worse. In July they lost their home and I tried everywhere to get them accommodation but nowhere would take them.”

“I felt awful that I couldn’t take them in, but I’m a single parent, with my own disabilities and I just knew I couldn’t cope.
“I tried my best for them and contacted so many different organisations, but just kept getting turned away.
“Social Services said they couldn’t come and assess them because they were in a tent – it was just farcical.
“When we saw Mitchell’s toes we were horrified, that this can happen to people in the 21st century is disgusting.”
Dawn thinks the Bedroom Tax is awful and says it is affecting people all over the country and should be repealed.
