*He might not be able to form a coherent sentence yet, but boy can this toddler put together a beat! The boy knows his stuff. Adults didn’t think much of it when the little boy started playing around with the knobs and buttons of a sophisticated music system at first, but after a while, when they noticed him paying attention to song selections and boppin’ his head in rhythm to the base-heavy beats, they knew this was no fluke.
Now, Oratilwe Hlongwane is given much respect as “DJ AJ,” South Africa’s youngest disc jockey.
The DJ does his thing at shopping malls in and around Johannesburg, South Africa; where crowds gather to watch him; whipping out their cellphones to share his talent on social media – where he has become a phenomenon.
According to his mother, Refiloe Marumo, the boy’s father, Glen Hlongwane, made the great decision to purchase an iPad for his then unborn son. Then he planned to download educational apps to accelerate his son’s education. Being an aspiring DJ as well as a gymnastics coach, the father also downloaded a disc jockeying app for himself.
DJ AJ was a year old when he lost interest in the educational apps and began to fiddle around with his dad’s music app. It wasn’t long before he started to duplicate what he had learned on the DJ app on real DJ equipment, experimenting with different sound effects and bouncing between songs. A cellphone video of him playing went viral and now DJ AJ has nearly 25,000 Facebook fans.
With no competition in his corner, he is now called on to make special appearances and even has sponsorship deals.
Of course even as a child, his newfound fame doesn’t escape its share of criticism; with some people actually accusing his parents of exploiting him.
“I’m not going to exploit my kid,” said his father.
DJ AJ’s parents will not allow him to play in clubs or at parties. And as far as his dad is concerned…“I can see a future Bill Gates here.”
