*It seems there is a death to report due to violence in the African American community every day. This one has put a Clayton County mother behind bars.
Latoya Tilson, 33, has been accused of shooting her son. Now, according to police, she faces several charges.
The shooting took place on Saturday night in College Park. And the young man’s father, Wayne Jones, told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot, that his son, Pierre Tilson, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
According to Jones, the shooting was an accident. He believes that Pierre was protecting his 13-year-old sister from another boy when the situation spiraled out of control.
Tilson, a popular boy who played drums in the school band, was a freshman at Southwest DeKalb High School.
From the video below, you can see that he was loved, admired and respected by his classmates. Even the school band director, James Seda, visited Tilson at the hospital Sunday in an attempt to encourage brain stimulation through music.
And his fellow bandmates were scheduled to visit too, before Tilson was pronounced dead.
Seda told Channel 2’s Liz Artz that he was heartbroken when he heard the news about Pierre and drove to Grady to help in any way he could.
Before his son passed away, his dad, who stayed his side until the end, told media, “He’s fighting. As long as he’s fighting, I’m not giving up on him. As long as there is an ounce, or an eighth of an ounce of opportunity to pull out, I’m going to be with him.”
RIP Pierre Tilson and know that you were… are, loved!
Jones had been rushed to Grady hospital with a gunshot wound to the head after his mother shot him and another person Saturday night at her College Park apartment complex. She had been trying to break up an argument.
Tilson is said to be devastated, and on suicide watch. She faces several charges including aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
But her husband, who realizes it was a terrible accident, wants her to know this, “If she’s looking or listening, I forgive you,” Jones said.
“I’ve been told — I haven’t spoken with her — she’s on suicide watch. She’s very distraught at this point,” Jones said.
“It’s sad. Someone like that so full of life. Pierre is a very charismatic kind of person,” Seda told Artz.
“I need everyone to pray for my son, that’s what I want,” Jones said. “Pray for me.”
The other shooting victim is in Grady after he suffered wounds to the buttocks and was driven to the hospital by friends.
