*Reports say that employees at the 5-Boro Burger fast food restaurant in New York City thought it strange that a woman had been in the restroom for such a long time. But they were shocked at what they found upon entering. Thirty-five-year-old Latisha Fisher, mother to one-year-old Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher, was holding her hand over the child’s mouth, smothering him to death.
It was around 2:25 p.m. on Monday, according to police. And employees at the restaurant had become suspicious as lines to the bathroom grew longer and the woman kept refusing to come out.
Upon unlocking the bathroom door and entering the employee actually saw foam was coming out of the toddler’s nose and mouth.
“I put my hand over his mouth to put him to sleep,” said Fisher, who claims to have heard, “the devil’s voice.”
As employees attempted to perform CPR on the lifeless toddler. Fisher tried to push them away. And by the time paramedics arrived, it was too late. The toddler was pronounced dead shortly after at Bellevue Hospital. His mother was arrested on the scene and taken into police custody. A law enforcement officer described Fisher to the New York Daily News as, “Soulless. She put her hand over his mouth and smothered him.”
Police authorities added, “She is a lunatic. She is crazy.”
Apparently, Fisher’s life was a tumultuous one. Neighbors said they often smelled marijuana coming out of her Lower East Side apartment; where she and her boyfriend Luis Ortiz, who is Gavriel’s father, was said to fight often. Fisher was described as “violent” by one neighbor. Another neighbor said that Fisher’s older son – a preteen – had been taken away from her following a stabbing incident on a family member.
If there is any truth to these reports, little Gavriel never had a chance of having a normal childhood. We are beginning to witness more and more horrible incidents with mother’s harming their children; and while it is easier to lash out at them, at some point, we have to lash out at the cause: Mental Illness and the lack of attention and care given to the issue and those struggling with it.
Fisher is set to be arraigned later today.
