*You know how you think you’ve heard it all, and then something mind-boggling happens and you realize you haven’t? You know how we’ve learned not to judge, but we find it hard not to when we hear certain things. Like this story of a young woman in New Jersey who authorities say put her newborn baby girl in the middle of a road and set the infant on fire.
Police were called by a resident on Friday who said he saw a woman “burning something” in the middle of a residential road in the township, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Philadelphia.
It was there that they found the baby in flames and put out the fire.
But although the little girl was reportedly breathing when she was flown to a hospital in Philadelphia, said Joel Bewley, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, she died about two hours later, according to his news release.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Her mother has since been charged with murder.
Burlington County prosecutors don’t know if the 22-year-old mother, Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier, has retained a lawyer.
Authorities believe Dorvilier doused her baby with an accelerant before she set her on fire. They don’t have a motive, but they did take the woman into custody Friday night.
Little is known at this point about the mother and the child. And neighbors on camera say they didn’t even know her. One woman in the neighborhood said its a quiet area and no one knows what is happening there. A man, who says he has children of his own, said he was shocked and couldn’t imagine someone doing something like this.
Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said details of the baby’s birth were still being investigated and no comments were made on whether the mother has a criminal record or if she has had any involvement with child welfare officials.
Dave Joseph, 45, of Pemberton Township told The Burlington County Times that he saw a young woman get out of her car and light something on fire in the middle of Simontown Road. He said the woman told him she was burning dog waste. He said the woman appeared calm and soon tried to flee the scene, but residents stopped her.
