*People are just naturally honest.
The statement above was spoken by a police officer, who is one of two speakers on a video where the subject is “Why You Should Never Talk to the Police.” He is not saying this as a compliment, but as a reason why he has successfully gotten so many people convicted of crimes. In the video, which is at the conclusion of this article, a passionate, informative and often comical presentation is given by a law school professor/former criminal defense attorney who provides a wealth of knowledge supported by concrete examples on how a person easily incriminates him or herself by talking too much.
He provides 8 reasons on why you should NOT talk to the police; even when you are pulled over on a traffic stop; in an “off the record” situation (its never off the record); or even when you know you are innocent.
His reasoning for this? It will NEVER help you.
“You can’t talk yourself out of getting arrested!”
Professor Rich Friedman, the law school professor and former criminal defense attorney in the video says how appreciative he is about something many of us don’t utilize enough, our constitutional rights, especially the fifth amendment. He reiterates points from the amendment, and states that the amendment has a bad rap, but also how important it is to those who don’t want to incriminate themselves.
This information will be especially important for African Americans. It has been proven time and again that the police are more likely to profile and arrest African Americans – even when they commit the same crimes as whites. Recent examples of this overflow from the incidents that continue to happen in Ferguson prompted by peaceful rallies that resulted from the Michael Brown shooting. They speak to the danger that young black men especially can run into when dealing with the cops. And as the law professor admits, though most situations won’t lead to deadly force, besides shooting you, cops can fool even innocent people into confessing guilt.
Trust this: No matter how smart or intelligent you think you are, you are totally capable of incriminating yourself.
