*Suffice it to say, this rare and unusual procedure probably wasn’t all about vanity.
While some people have a hard time watching themselves insert their own contact lenses, imagine having to be awake as a doctor comes near your eye with a needle. Yikes! But the rare procedure of getting an eyeball tattoo is one that the patient must be fully awake for. And lets be real, the only time someone would have the nerve, courage or gumption to request anything like this, would have to be for something really, really serious.
And it was.
The patient behind this surgery was tired of attracting unwanted attention due to a permanently milky-white pupil, which was the result of a serious childhood eye injury.
William Watson, 58, had to lay still and watch as the tattoo artists inserted the needle and applied ink into his eyeball.
The reason Watson, who resides in New York, chose to have the unusual procedure was because he was hit by a ball when he was young and it left him with a discolored eye that he said attracted unwanted attention from strangers.
Not that the tattoo will improve his condition in any way; but it will give the eye the appearance of being fixed.
After the one hour procedure, Watson said: “It felt like someone was rubbing it – that’s about it.”
Dr. Emil Chynn of Park Ave SafeSight and CJ Pento, tattooed the eyeball, assisting by a tattoo artist from the Red Legged Devils tattoo shop in Brooklyn, New York, who advised and mixed the correct colors.
Dr. Chynn practiced the delicate pupil-tattooing maneuvers on a GRAPE before the operation.
“It will be a big change. I won’t have the scar tissue no more and I’ll be able to look people in the eye without people saying too much about it,” Watson shared.
