*Scroll down to see in-depth video and hear dramatic 911 call. A man who recently stormed into an Oklahoma food processing plant shouting Muslim and Islamic phrases before beheading one woman and stabbing another have several members of the Muslim religion speaking out against his actions; which they say have absolutely nothing to do with the beliefs of their faith, which is a faith of peace.
The man apparently entered the Vaughan Foods distribution company’s plant with the intent to kill on his mind and did so, with the first woman he saw. According to reports, the two women may not have known the killer personally, but had the misfortune of being in his way.
The killer has been identified as Alton Alexander Nolan, 30, and it has been learned that he recently converted to the Muslim religion, and had been attempting to convert others at his work. He also has a long rap sheet that lists encounters with violence and the law since 2010.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections online records Nolan wears a tattoo of Jesus on his chest, and the Muslim greeting, “Assalamu alaikum” (Peace be with you) on his abdomen.
Sgt. Jeremy Lewis confirmed that Nolan had been fired from the Vaughan food plant recently.
The first woman Nolan saw and killed was 54-year-old Colleen Hufford. He saw Traci Johnson, 43, next — and stabbed her several times.
Lewis said that Nolan’s killing spree would likely have continued were it not for Mark Vaughan, the off-duty detective who shot him multiple times. The detective was a former owner of Vaughan Foods.
Nolan was taken to a hospital and according to CNN, he is expected to survive.
“This was not going to stop if he [Mark Vaughan] didn’t stop it. It could have gotten a lot worse,” Lewis told the AP.
The Associated Press reported that the suspect and victims only knew each other through work and were not involved outside of their jobs. Lewis told the publication that Nolen had recently attempted to convert several employees to Islam.
UPDATE: A recent report claims that Nolan was screaming Islamic phrases as he entered the distribution warehouse. A statement from CAIR, Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil liberties advocacy organization headquartered in Washington, D. C., responded to the incident and the man’s claims of being Muslim says,
“Islam stands for peace…What this gentleman did in Moore, which is inhumane and barbaric, is definitely not a representation of what our faith teaches. And we hope and pray that justice will be brought against the perpetrator soon , so that the victims and their families can find some sort of solace in that justice…”–Adam Soltani, Exec. Dir. CAIR, Oaklama
Note from the writer: In my opinion this man represents the harm that can be done by an overzealous new convert to any religion. He is like so many who have not studied the fundamentals of a religion long enough or deeply enough to learn what it stands for, before making claims to take actions on its behalf. Wrong!
