*A clearly pregnant woman who attempted to come to the aid of her son, was thrown to the ground, then straddled, by a Brooklyn police officer who apparently didn’t take kindly to her intervention.
Sandra Amezquita, 44, was trying to help her 17-year-old son, Jhohan Lemos, who was being arrested.
Amezquita, from Colombia, is five months pregnant. During the altercation with the NYPD officer, she was thrown down — belly first, before he straddled her and pressed her stomach into the ground.
The disturbing altercation was captured on video and has prompted an investigation by the NYPD Bureau of Internal Affairs.
“The first thing I thought was they killed my baby and they’re going to kill my wife,” Ronel Lemos, the father of the child, told the Daily News.
“You would think the police would respect a woman that is pregnant,” added the injured mother, who had to speak to the news site through an interpreter.
“I was afraid something happened to my baby. I am still afraid that something is wrong,” said Amezquita, who still complains of some persistent abdominal pain, and has bruises on her stomach and arm.
Immediately after the incident, she suffered from vaginal bleeding.
Amezquita, who had all of her documentation papers in order, was given a summons for disorderly conduct and Lemos was arrested for assaulting an officer, the Daily News reports.
According to the report, the two were protesting the arrest of Jhohan Lemos, who was targeted for a knife that was clipped to his belt, according to the news site. The teenager was allegedly being beaten by the cops, which prompted his parents’ interference. In photos of the teen taken after his arrest, the boy seems to have a swollen right eye and bruised face, the Daily News notes.
Warning: Raw video
The video below is clearly taken by a spectator of the disturbing incident between the police and Sandra A. The man filming the footage can be heard using crude language, and saying “You broke her arm” and “Dude, she’s pregnant” and “I’m going to put this on the news.”
