*Animal lovers all over the nation – and dog lovers in particular, are saddened by the death of Zeus, the Great Dane from Michigan who held the title of the world’s tallest dog.
Zeus was 5 years old.
Zeus’ owner Kevin Doorlag told the Kalamazoo Gazette that the canine made his debut as the tallest living dog in the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records. He was an astounding 44 inches tall (about the size of an average donkey) at the shoulder and 7 feet, 4 inches on his hind legs; and weighed 165 pounds.
Zeus gulped down a 30-pound bag of food every two weeks, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer.
Doorlag, of Otsego, said the entire family will miss Zeus.
Zeus was a local celebrity in the Kalamazoo area and frequently visited local schools and hospitals as a therapy dog. Doorlag said he will also miss seeing the joy Zeus brought to other people.
“Those are some of the things I’ll never forget about him,” Doorlag said. “He was definitely a great dog.”
Zeus, who would have celebrated his sixth birthday in November, died last week from old age, according to his owner. Danes are said to only live 6 to 8 years.
Rest in sweet peace, Zeus. You done good with your dash, boy!
