*New music is on the way from legendary rapper MC Lyte. She has teamed up with Chicago-native Common and 10 Beats on “Dear John” a new track and open letter to black men; which will also be the first release from her upcoming LP.
This will be the rapper’s first studio album in more than a decade and it is slated to be released later this year.
“Dear John” is a fresh track with a strong urban hip-hop vibe. The song, which will also be featured on the rappers’ upcoming episode of “Being: MC Lyte,” asks the question, “Whatchu wanna be? You wanna be ballas, shot-callers, dippin’ in the Benz straight lawless?/ Or, would you rather be fathers to your daughters, even though it’s getting harder?”which will air on Saturday, September 13, 2014 on Centric, 9pm est / 8c. Immediately following the episode, fans and media will be able to see Lyte as she participates in a live-streamed Q&A for which you can register at www.mclyte.com to view or participate in.
The track “Dear John” is the anthem for #EducateOURMen, the signature scholarship initiative of MC Lyte’s Hip Hop Sisters Foundation. Each year since the organization’s start, they have presented two $100,000 university scholarships to send deserving men of color back to school. The scholarships are presented during the Soul Train Music Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show. This year, dozens of scholarships earmarked to send men of color to HBCU’s will be presented. Sponsors of the scholarships include Russell Simmons, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Jada Pinkett Smith and Faith Evans.
