Christian Community Up in Arms Already Over ‘Black Jesus’…C’mon, Is a ‘Campaign’ Really Necessary?

Black Jesus

*Oh god. Er, excuse me. But can people wait to actually see Aaron McGruder’s “Black Jesus” before they get all up in arms about it? Dang! The Christian activist network’s One Million Moms and a team of pastors have taken offense at the character already and want the Adult Swim network to nix the show.

Do they really think that devout Christians are going to love Jesus any less based on anything Aaron McGruder puts out? By now, don’t they realize that absolutely NOTHING is spared when it comes to shows on stations like Adult Swim? Or comedy in general?

In the Adult Swim show, “Black Jesus” lives in Compton, California and goes on a “daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.”

So Jesus is still ‘spreading love’. Is it the way he is spreading it that is the problem? Why? In reality, wouldn’t Jesus “speak to people in a way that they can relate to” in order to get his message of peace, love and forgiveness heard and understood?

David A. Rogers, pastor of the House of Prayer for All Nations Ministries in Chicago, Illinois, calls the show “utter foolishness and disrespectful” and wrote a letter to the Turner Broadcasting system expressing his outrage:

“We, the Christian community are vehemently opposed and violently offended at this upcoming program soon to air on your channel called, ‘BLACK JESUS.’ The level of disrespect aimed at the depiction of our Lord and Savior is inexcusable. We are hard pressed to find any value in this program, its message or its purpose. As a group of believers, we are prepared to launch a mass campaign and boycott of your channel and any advertisers that are financially profiting from this program. These continued attacks against our Christian values and the degrading imagery of the Lord Jesus Christ, will be met with social media awareness to the entire Christian community and a targeted boycott of your advertisers.

One Million Moms is another organization that is not pleased. They have called the show “blasphemous” and says it “makes a mockery of our Lord…the entire program will be based on lies about Christianity.”

No offense intended here, and I knew (once I saw the previews) that the program would be controversial; and yes, people have to stand for something or they’ll fall for anything, right. So write a letter and let your thoughts be heard, by all means…but a campaign? Hmm…Somehow, I don’t think that is going to get the show cancelled – but I also don’t think t should. After all, its adult swim, and they do stupid stuff all the time.

I welcome your thoughts?
