*We generally hear of actual bodies being found in this compartment. But one lucky 16-year-old boy is safe and sound following a 5-1/2-hour flight from California to Maui in the wheel well of an aircraft.
According to the Associated Press, security footage showed the boy scrambled over an airport fence, crossed a tarmac and climbed into the wheel well of Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45, then flew for five freezing hours to Hawaii — a misadventure that forced authorities to take a hard look at the security system that protects the nation’s airline fleet.
Said to have been mad at his parents, the boy, who lives in (and ran away from) Santa Clara, Calif., hopped out of the wheel well of the Boeing 767 on the Maui airport tarmac on Sunday. He was found wandering on the airport grounds and was discovered by FBI, before being taken to a hospital, and being determined unharmed.
This raises some serious security breach questions as authorities tried to determine how the boy slipped through multiple layers of security, including wide-ranging video surveillance, German shepherds and Segway-riding police officers.
