*In a story we ran last week about the white motorist in Detroit that hit the black kid who ran into traffic with his car, before jumping out to check on him, there are new developments. As it turns out, one woman – a retired nurse – was watching the entire scene from her apartment across the street.
She saw the accident, witnessed the driver, Steve Utash, 54, get out of his car to check on the boy, and the angry mob of approximately 150 people who galvanized around Utash and proceeded to punch him.
But Deborah Hughes, packing heat, was not going to let it go down like that. She ran out of her apartment and…threw herself on top of Utash.
“He was a man. He wasn’t white. He was a man. And I was ready to shoot anybody who hit that man again,” Hughes told FOX2 News in Detroit.
The African-American woman was protecting Steve Utash, who had accidentally hit the 10-year-old boy with his truck last week and got out to see if the youngster was hurt.
Hughes said she heard the commotion, looked out her window and saw a distraught Utash calling out, “What did I do? Did I hurt him?” to the crowd that had quickly began to form.
When things turned ugly, and she could see blow after blow raining down on the man, that’s when she got her handgun and ran out the door.
“Me, I don’t want to hurt nobody,” said the Detroit woman.
The boy was not seriously hurt and was treated for a broken leg.
Police have said Utash clipped the boy with his truck after the youngster ran into the street. They are still looking for others who participated in the beating.
Hughes was praised as a “Detroit hero” for helping to break up the mob.
