*Could it be that Oprah Winfrey just loves, loves, LOVES Southern California? Is it because of the beautiful weather…fabulous-looking people…celebrities everywhere you look, that she is willing to cut ties with her beloved Chicago?
None of the above. According to Lady O, its just time. She has decided to sell Harpo Sudios, the last of her ties to the”Windy City.”
Her “Oprah Winfrey Show” has been filmed at Harpo (Oprah spelled in reverse if you’ve been living on another planet) Studios since 1990 and in 2011, she walked away from the daytime talk show to develop her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
No stranger to the “school of hard knocks” Oprah saw OWN go through its struggles early on and many tried to encourage her to cut her losses. But those same folks are probably amongst those addicted now, to shows such as Tyler Perry’s “Have and Have Nots,” “Super Soul Sundays,” “Welcome to Sweetie Pies,” and others as the network is singing a much finer tune.
Still, Winfrey knows how to let go. And she is releasing her hold on the 3.5 acre campus; at which 200 employees go to work.
“We have entered into a purchasing agreement with Sterling Bay for the four-building Harpo Studios campus in Chicago’s West Loop,” Harpo told Crain’s Chicago Business in a statement. “We expect the transaction to be closed in 30 days. The property will be leased back to Harpo for two years and the studio will continue to produce programming for OWN.”
The property will sell for about $32 million, according to Crain’s.
