Her first child, Clarence, was born when Aretha was 12 and her second child, Edward, came when she was 14. Her grandmother and sister raised both boys; allowing Aretha to focus on her music career.
Early in her career, Aretha dealt with addictions to chain smoking and alcoholism. She quit smoking in 1992.
