*When she heard the news that her brother, Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of ’12 Years A Slave’ had been nominated for an Oscar, CNN reporter Zain Asher, couldn’t contain her excitement. Her heartfelt reaction came as quite a surprise to her colleagues. Why? Because many of them had no idea that she was related to the star.
‘This is a day my family has been hoping and waiting for for such a long time,’ Asher, a financial news reporter, told fellow CNN host Carol Costello after the network got wind of the connection.
‘He’s been acting since he was thirteen years old, and he’s worked so hard for this.’
On air, Asher tells the endearing story of how growing up her brother was “always in his bedroom practicing Shakespeare lines – writing Shakespeare on the wall.” Her emotional recollection adds how she would “go out with my friends and come home and in the morning he would be reciting ‘measure for measure.'”
With voice trembling, the reporter apologizes to Costello for her tears saying, “I’ve never cried on TV before.”
Other actors joining Ejiofor on the short list for “Best Actor” are Christian Bale, “American Hustle,” Bruce Dern, “Nebraska,” Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club.”
