Websites No Longer Want Your Nasty Comments. Change is Underway!

*Listen up. The days of Internet users being able to slander, berate, degrade and even threaten in the “comments” section of websites may be coming to an end.

Ever read an article, review, or even a comment on the Internet that you disagreed with? If you’re like most of us, of course you have.

But here’s where we draw the line.

Some of us will “agree to disagree.” Their comments will most likely offer an intelligent counter perspective or argument. But then there are the others. They will take the opportunity to say something like the post below, whose comments stem from a disagreement with a recent article about the Affordable Care Act.

“If it were up to me, you progressive libs destroying this country would be hanging from the gallows for treason. People are awakening though. If I were you, I’d be very afraid,” wrote someone using the name “JBlaze.”

According to an article in The Sacramento Bee, your ability to comment at all may soon be in jeopardy.

Blame it on anonymity. People feel free to say things they would not ordinarily say if their real name was attached to it; and they stood the chance of being held accountable. Or blame it on human nature; we let our emotions take over and lose all self restraint.

Now, a growing number of websites and search engines are making changes to what’s being called the Wild West of online commentary. Companies including Google and the Huffington Post are trying everything from deploying moderators to forcing people to use their real names in order to restore civil discourse. Some sites, such as Popular Science, are banning comments altogether.

  1. Thank God! It is about time someone put an end to this madness! However, I don’t see how they can make someone post their real name.
