Everyone expected there to be rioting and unruly behavior after the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, but African Americans and/or supporters of the Martin family used their heads, organized, and took the legal system to task.
But the U.S. Open of Surfing that is a meeting and competition of the “dudes” of the surf world concluded in a different manner. The Huntington Beach locals are used to the unruly nature of the surfing community (i.e. public urination, littering, drinking in cars, etc.) during the U.S. Open, but this year’s event ended in rioting and fighting uncharacteristic of the usual crowd, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Now the Huntington Beach event may be in jeopardy of being moved to another venue. One resident, Michael Heh, has lived near the main area for attendees since 2009. He told the L.A. Times that this year’s event was more of a nuisance than in past years because it appears that the event has ballooned to attract many more than in past years.
“It seemed bigger, more people and more rowdy,” said Heh, 48. “I’ve never seen this many people packed into Main Street.”
Also in the report:
“Authorities said officers on the ground fired pepper balls and nonlethal projectiles at rioters. Several officers sustained minor injuries, and one person was treated and released from a hospital after being hit by a rubber projectile.”
Well, the restraint of the officers and their ability to control the crowd is being applauded by the mayor. Let’s keep this in our mental rolodex as future functions that attract a predominant amount of African Americans will surely call for the same restraint.
