Black women have often been under the microscope and/or the center of attention for their coveted derriere’s. The plumper the butt the more sought after they are for rapper’s music videos and believed to be more prominent in the south as a result of good ol’ southen cooking.
But never have we ever heard of a black woman’s round posterior being associated with some sort of defect of her spine referred to as “Ghetto Booty”! So, it is of no surprise when Terry Ragland, 55, of Jackson, Tennessee, was treated for back pain and diagnosed by her new doctor with this sort of unofficial medical terminology, she was shocked.
Ragland was treated by Dr. Timothy Sweo in April, when he thought that this was suitable or acceptable to convey to Ragland in racist laymen’s terms her medical condition that is really called “lumbar lordosis.” He didn’t think that a woman with “ghetto booty” would understood the terminology and this was the only way to explain it to her.
“What I was trying to explain to that patient is that she has lumbar lordosis, which is a fancy name for the curve of the lower spine that makes the buttocks protrude more. In trying to explain that I said that she had ghetto booty and she didn’t like that apparently. That was my attempt to explain why she had the back problem. It wasn’t the whole problem but it was part of it and she got upset about it,” said Sweo by phone. “You cannot cure lumbar lordosis.”
So he offered her pain medication and sent her on her way. The outrage is twofold in this case because: 1) he didn’t believe that the standard medical conversation befitted her; and 2) he thought that what he said was perfectly fine, so much so, that he doesn’t have a problem explaining it to reporters. He went on to say:
“I think I do understand why her feelings were hurt but I don’t understand what’s offensive about it.”
Once the legal proceedings begin maybe someone will explain it to him since he apparently is suffering from a case of dumbwhitemanisosis.
