As we enter into firework season, the noises of firecrackers and other lethal fireworks will ring out and scare folks for the next few weeks. Many people will be convinced that they hear gunfire, but they will be wrong!
Detroit’s 55th firework display occurred Monday night and to say the firework show is eventful may be an understatement. Kids and families drown the downtown area and Belle Isle, the famous island that rests between Canada and Detroit, for a prime location to view the firework show. And once thousands of residents get settled in for the show, it is mayhem if any type of disturbance breaks out…which it has MANY times over the years. But last night, what officers and residents thought was gunfire, a later police investigation found that was possibly only the reverberation of the firework sounds off of the downtown skyscrapers. They did not uncover any evidence of gunfire.
But, in the moment when attendees thought they heard gunshots, they were off and running for the nearest exit as officers yelled a precautionary “get down” to folks preparing to scatter. But there were other incidents that made the night more eventful than some would like when an officer was hit by a car and suffered a broken leg and a suspicious package was found in the Blue Cross Blue Shield parking structure. It was the second suspicious package found at a BCBS facility yesterday.
