The schools across America are either having budget problems or someone is mismanaging the heck out of the resources because we’ve already reported that the teachers are having to put money in the pot, but now the students?

Believe it or not, Michelle Obama’s alma mater, Chicago’s Whitney Young Magnet High School, may be forced to charge students $500 for a 7th period class if they want to take more than the required six classes.  The extreme measures were announced by the school’s principal Joyce Kenner on Thursday in a letter to parents, teachers and faculty to make up the just over $1 million in budget cuts the school is facing, according to the Huffington Post.

The letter explained that the elite schools budget was cut by “just over 1.1 million dollars.” Kenner’s letter also explained that the school will also be forced to “eliminate its writing center, as well as language classes, ACT prep and various staff positions.” She explained that the $500 fee would be a sort of “buy back” for teachers to pay for additional instruction time.

It’s amazing that the school has fallen off the First Lady’s radar.  But now, maybe she will ask her husband to do something about it!  If the First Lady is among your school’s alum and your school is in financial trouble, all of our public schools are in trouble.
