It’s hard to not use the term “racist” when certain stories hit the news with no other rhyme nor reason for the injustice committed against a black person…especially in small, remote cities in the U.S.
Jessie Thornton, 64, is a retired firefighter that moved to Surprise, Arizona, with his wife who works in the ER. He has adjusted his sleep schedule to her schedule, so he is regularly active at night. But, the change in schedule has garnered him unwanted police attention and one night resulted in him being pulled over for driving over the white line in the road. Well, he then found out why the town is named “Surprise” when the officer proceeded to arrest and charge him with a DUI with absolutely no alcohol in his system, nor impairment, according to ABC 7.
Thornton works out at night at the local LA Fitness, where he swims. But the cop looked at his bloodshot eyes and told him he could tell that he had been drinking.
“I take my glasses off and he says, ‘You’ve got bloodshot eyes.’ I said, ‘I’ve been swimming at LA Fitness,’ and he says, ‘I think you’re DUI,’” said Thornton. “He (the officer) goes, ‘Well we’re going to do a sobriety test.’ I said, ‘OK, but I got bad knees and a bad hip with surgery in two days.’”
The officers forced him to sit on the curb in handcuffs knowing about his hip condition and he was in so much pain he had to shift and nearly lay down on the ground.
“I couldn’t even sit on the ground like that and they knew it and I was like laying on the ground, then they put me in the back of an SUV and when I asked the officer to move her seat up ’cause my hip hurt she told me to stop whining,” said Thornton.
Needless to say Thornton is now taking legal action against the Surprise Police Department who concluded in their report that there were no signs of alcohol or drugs in his system.
“Yes, I do the breathalyzer and it comes back zero, zero, zero,” said Thornton.
While in custody, a “DRE” or drug recognition expert is called to test Thornton.
“After he did all the tests, he says, ‘I would never have arrested you, you show no signs of impairment,’” said Thornton.
Even his attorney had to admit that this was a case of D-W-B.
“This is a case of D-W-B, driving while black,” said Thornton’s attorney Marc Victor.
One would think that there would be a certain level of respect between officers and fire fighters, but these officers offered Thornton nothing but disrespect and embarrassment. He is suing the department for $500,000 and he should get EVERY PENNY and then some! Time to move, Jessie! Never trust a state that doesn’t recognize Martin Luther King’s birthday!
