Jasper, Texas, officers Ricky Grissom and Ryan Cunningham were caught on police station surveillance video, beating 25-year-old Keyarika Diggles, May, 5, 2013, after dragging her to jail for a traffic ticket without a warrant.

Do you remember James Byrd?  He was the black man in Jasper, Texas, that was dragged by a pickup truck until his arm was ripped from his body and he was decapitated.  The three white boys that offered him a ride that horrific night were  Shawn Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer and John William King; all of which have were sentenced to death with the exception of Berry, who was given a life sentence.  Now, those memories of racial hatred in the town are being drudged up again.

According to the Huffington Post, the city of Jasper, Texas, is under fire again with the beating of 25-year-old Keyarika Diggles inside a police station.  The surveillance cameras in the station caught the entire incident on tape where two officers, Ricky Grissom and Ryan Cunningham, are seen ramming her head into the front desk and dragging her by her leg into a cell after cuffing her and pulling on her arms.

She was trying to arrange her bail with her mother when Grissom walked in and ended her call abruptly.  It appeared to set off an argument between the two that escalated.  Cunningham then rushed in and slammed her head up against the main desk before placing her in handcuffs.  The good thing is that justice was swift in this case as the Jasper City Council got rid of both officers with a unanimous vote on Monday.

The council has also decided to get the city’s district attorney to consider criminal charges against the officers.

  1. Outrageous!!! Absolutely outrageous!! In flabbergasted, but really surprised. In flash this story was brought out in the open. Police brutality and racism never went away. May justice be served for the victim of this crime.

  2. As a law enforcement person and after viewing both angles I can say she was resisting. However once she was cuffed the dragging mess was way over board. There were two officers present and all they had to do was one on each side pick her up by her arms. Law suit on them.

  3. We don’t know the entire story. Obviously , without saying, the officers went far overboard and could have simply handcuffed her and put her in the cell. What we do not know is what she said , and did off-camera that may have helped to creat this situation to escalate. Police are under a great deal of stress, and people in general today are disrespectful and rude. I’m not condoning their actions , but I would guess this lady did a great deal to provoke this situation . If she did I do not feel sorry for her.

  4. Jsipe: by that rational is it ok to respond to your kids by hitting them if you r stressed and they back talk. To me these police are not serving or protecting. There is no way this happened. I understand controlling the situation but not this way. Every action these officers did was truly unprofessional and I am glad they were fired. Lets hope they are sued and black people in jasper use this incident as a president for further injustice by this town.

  5. Nothing she could have did or said off camera could have provoked being attacked while your hands are handcuffed behind your back. That is the act of a coward and a bully. Not the act of a policeman being put in a provocative situation. If she said or did something off camera to provoke these dummies, why did they wait until she was rendered literally helpless to defend herself before taking action? What a dumb statement.
