Cancer is an awful disease that has baffled medical professionals around the world since its inception. But some speculate the origins of cancerous cells stem from drinking, smoking, and stress.
But not actor Michael Douglas, he is convinced he knows different. The 68-year-old Douglas, known for his most memorable role as the cheating husband in Fatal Attraction, believes that his throat cancer came from performing oral sex that put him in contact with the human papilloma virus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted disease in the U.S., according to the Daily Mail.
Initially he thought that his cancer came from many years of drinking and smoking. After seeing a doctor about his throat, he was prescribed antibiotics. But, when he visited a friend’s doctor in Montreal, everything changed. He used a tongue depressor that located the tumor at the base of his tongue that no other doctor noticed before. Douglas is now in remission, but he fought a six-month battle with the disease from August 2010 until January 2011.
According to the report, last year Professor Margaret Stanley of Cambridge University said boys must be given the vaccine for HPV too. Presently, the shot is given to teenage girls and prevents them from contracting the virus. So, what do you think will happen next? Will men stop performing oral sex because of Michael Douglas’ claim or will they just go get an HPV shot at their doctor like the young women?
