Florida has to have some of the most unusually racist areas in the country. It’s been over 50 years since Emmett Till was brutally attacked and killed for “flirting” and “looking” at a white woman and now police are taking up where his attackers left off…but in 2013.
Maurissa Holmes, of Miami Gardens, was at Haulover Beach for a Memorial Day picnic with her family when her son, Tremaine McMillian, was arrested by police as they accused him of “clenching his fists” and giving officers “dehumanizing stares,” according to the Grio. Holmes told the Grio that her 14-year-old son was just playing with friends and his new puppy in the water when two police officers on ATVs rolled up because they thought the teens were fighting.
But once they discovered that they were not fighting, the officers said her son did not comply with them.
“As he was walking towards me I see the officers walking behind him with the puppy in one hand and the bottle to nurse the puppy in the other hand,” she told the Grio, saying the officers grabbed Tremaine. “They slammed him to the ground, they choked him, to where he couldn’t breathe and he urinated on himself. I kept asking them to please get off my child because he can’t breathe. They kept saying ‘get back, get back.’”
Her son has been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer with violence. They have assigned him a public defender and a July 16th court date. There is no doubt that this is some of the worst police conduct for what appears to be a crimeless arrest. During the arrest, the puppy was injured and Holmes had to give the puppy away this week because she can’t afford the veterinarian bill.
It is our sincerest prayer that an attorney sees this story and Holmes video of her son’s arrest and lends their expertise to this case to sue the Miami police department. Read more here and watch the video below. The teen looks lifeless as he is held by the officer on top of him.
