Normally when you think of men running around drinking, taking drugs, and carrying guns, you might think of a club in L.A. But the latest video footage didn’t catch any professional athletes or entertainers in the back of the club, it revealed one of the nation’s tax based country clubs…prison.
Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans, was featured in court and presented on film “to determine whether a federal consent decree is warranted to reform the jail,” according to the New York Times. After seeing the inmates roam Bourbon Street at night, shoot drugs, drink beer, and brandish a loaded gun, there’s no way the federal judge overseeing the case could not deny the reform and demand firing the entire staff; starting with Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman of Orleans Parish, who runs the jail.
According to the report, the video was found in a safe and was filmed four years ago. The Southern Poverty Law Center sought a class-action lawsuit on behalf of the inmates against Sheriff Gusman for the disgusting and violent conditions of the jail. The U.S. Dept. of Justice even had to tag along on the lawsuit after hearing about the prison’s environment.
But the reform of the prison had been delayed and swept under the rug largely because of claims of financial duress it would cause the city. In fact, the city said it would cause “catastrophic damage” to its budget. But when looking at the footage, there appears to be more problems with corruption than anything financial and a changing of the guard, no pun intended, is immediately necessary.
See for yourself. Warning! The raw footage can be disturbing with scenes of drug use and guns.
