The world’s oldest profession is so accepted in society that we joke about pimps and have even branded them with their very own swag and slap. But, it is a serious industry and some have made a lifestyle of it.
Two of Amsterdam’s oldest hookers, identical twins Louise and Martine Fokkens are 70 years old and have decided to give up their garter belts. They have been selling their bodies for money for more than 50 years. They became hookers, one because her husband became her pimp and forced her into prostitution, and the other because of economical reasons.
According to the Daily Mail, Louise has four children and Martine has three. Martine is still taking an elderly customer that she said has been coming to her for so long, she can’t give him up.
“I couldn’t give him up. He’s been coming to me for so long it’s like going to church on a Sunday.”
Even though she is still taking customers, they both agree that the industry has changed so much that they do not want to be involved in it anymore. Louise said that her arthritis makes some positions too painful to perform.
But, while we may make our jokes and laugh about the absurdity of it all, there are plenty of women selling their bodies and being brutalized because, like Martine, the state funds are not enough for them to live on. The twins have written a book called “The Ladies of Amsterdam” and was a part of a graphic documentary last year called “Meet the Fokkens” that they hope will give them the money they need.
Check out the trailer below and watch the movie’s directors that set out to tell their story, but expose the underbelly of the profession that is rarely seen from this angle, no pun intended. Some parts of the video are graphic.
