The rap world has always been scrutinized for some of the gritty delivery in artists’ songs. But, none of the songs have been so disrespectful as to compare a sex act with a tragic lynching in American history.
Well, who else would go there, but Lil’ Wayne. He is featured on a track with rapper Future for his song “Karate Chop” which was recently leaked to the internet. On the track, he compares the beating death and/or lynching of 14-year-old Emmet Till in 1955, to what he would do to a woman’s genitals. The song appears on the mixtape “This Is That Southern Smoke Vol. 4″, according to the Huffington Post.
The lyric in question is:
“Beat that p___y up like Emmett Till.”
The vulgar reference is made that much more disgusting by its reference to Till. Unfortunately, the Till family heard about the song and Wayne’s lyrics and felt “disrespected” by what they heard. Dr. Boyce Watkins’ interviewed one of Till’s cousins who said:
“I just couldn’t understand how you could compare the gateway of life to brutality and punishment of death,” she continued. And I feel that they don’t have no pride and no dignity as black men. Our family was very, very offended. Very hurt, disturbed by it.”
Thankfully, Epic Records, Future’s label, took the complaints into consideration and said that the lyric has been removed from the song. Shame on you, Lil’ Wayne. Why would you need this level of shock value in your songs? It appears that the world’s young people think of you as a star already. What are you trying to prove? C’mon son! You owe the Till family an apology.
