In April 2012, we wrote a story called “Racism in Restaurants Survey: ‘Inferior Service is Warranted’ Toward Blacks” and there were numerous comments and reports of undertipping and African American customers behaving badly. Unfortunately, the newest incident going viral on the internet may or may not support these claims.
A St. Louis, Missouri, Applebee’s found themselves caught in a predicament between waitress Chelsea Welch and customer Pastor Alois Bell, 37, when Bell felt the automated tip of 18 percent was a bit much to pay her waitress when she doesn’t even give God that much, according to the Daily Mail and Bell’s receipt that was posted on Reddit by Welch:
But Welch, a co-worker of the server that waited on Bell was shown the receipt and she took it upon herself to post it online. Attached to the picture, Welch wrote in the caption:
“My mistake sir, I’m sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries.”
So the story goes, Bell was with 20 people and the 18 percent was the automatic tip applied to the large party. Bell refutes the claim that she was with 20 people and that she did not pay up. She claims she had was already charged the tip plus she left six dollars in cash on the table.
Applebee’s released a statement that said:
“Our Guests’ personal information – including their meal check – is private, and neither Applebee’s nor its franchisees have a right to share this information publicly. Our franchisee has apologized to the Guest and has taken disciplinary action with the Team Member for violating their Guest’s right to privacy.”
But Bell now feels she’s disgraced her church and her ministry at Truth in the Word Deliverance Ministries, a store front church with 15 members, according to the Smoking Gun. Check out her interview below.
