The tennis world has seen many temper tantrums on the court. The king of them all is John McEnroe. His temper was explosive as his game. But now, he has competition.
Serena Williams had to make way for up and coming American tennis star, 19-year-old Sloane Stephens during the Australian Open Quarterfinals. Stephens came up against her hero and prevailed. But, as we all know, Serena can get a bit ummmmm, temperamental.
Stephens is the newcomer to the Australian Open Quarterfinals as this was her first game and win in the Aussie Open. And what a big win it was. She said that she even has a poster on her wall of Serena Williams, but now she might want to put one up of herself. Ohhhh, a smack talker already, ay! Watch it Stephens! You were battling an injured tennis superhero.
Williams suffered a back injury during the eighth game of the second set, according to the Huffington Post. While chasing a low ball, she appears to awkwardly turn her back. Later Williams told reporters:
“Everyone at this stage in the locker room has something wrong with them. It’s no excuse,” she said. “I went for this drop shot and it just locked up on me. I couldn’t really rotate after that.”
And her judgment of herself was apparent in her actions when she smashed her racket into the court during the third set. Once she demolished the racket, she flung it toward the bench where she took a seat. Check out the highlights of the match that led to the outburst.
Congratulations Sloane Stephens, but remain humble! You just beat a highly competitive 15-time Grand Slam winner, who had just came off a run of 20 consecutive wins. She’ll be back!
